My driver was speeding. Who pays?
Camera fines go to the car owner on DVLA records. Police say the owner is liable even if someone else was driving.
Camera fines go to the car owner, the name on DVLA records. Police say the owner is liable even if someone else was driving.
This matters for:
- Taxi and trotro owners with drivers
- Work-and-pay (hire purchase) cars
- Ride-hailing cars
- Lending your car to a friend or family member
The only time a driver gets the SMS directly is when an MTTD officer stops them on the road with a handheld device.
What owners can do
- Agree in writing with your driver who pays fines. Keep it simple: date, car, names, signatures.
- Check *220# every week for your car numbers.
- Pay or contest within 14 days. After that, 1% a day is added.
How the owner and driver share the cost is a private matter between them. Police deal with the owner.
