Old phone number on DVLA? You could miss fines.

Last checked 3 Nov 2026 · 1 min read

Short answer

The SMS goes to the number DVLA has. If it is old, you will not get it, but the 14 days still run. Check *220# and update DVLA.

The fine SMS goes to the phone number DVLA has for the owner. If that number is old, or belongs to someone else, you will not get the message.

The 14 days still run. The 1% late fee still grows.

What to do

  1. Dial *220# now. Check your car number. This works from any phone.
  2. Go to DVLA to update your phone number. Bring your car papers and ID.
  3. Until it is fixed, check *220# every week.

Bought a used car? Make sure DVLA has your name and your number. Police say the old owner stays liable until DVLA records the new owner and phone number. Problems can land on both of you.

Got an SMS for a car that is not yours? Do not pay. Call 059 692 2402 and tell them.

Troski cannot change DVLA records. Only DVLA can.
