The SMS goes to the owner on DVLA records. If DVLA still has your name, the fine comes to you.

Police say: you stay liable until DVLA records the new owner and their phone number. That includes the fine and the late fee.

What to do now

  1. Check the date of the offence. Was it after you sold the car?
  2. Find your sale papers. Note the buyer's name and number.
  3. Contact the buyer. Ask them to finish the DVLA transfer.
  4. Call the Call Centre on 059 692 2402 for advice on your case.
  5. If you plan to contest, start online within 14 days.

Next time: finish the DVLA transfer with the buyer. Reports say this should be done within 2 weeks of sale. Do not hand over the car before the papers are done.

Stolen car? That is different. A police report made before the offence can help your contest.
